AEGIS DEFENCE NETWORK

The AEGIS DEFENCE NETWORK was a planetary shield in orbit around Earth. Launched by the Neo-Essentialists as a last-ditch attempt to defend their crumbling empire, the Aegis network was secretly designed and constructed in the space of three years. It was weapon of mass destruction, as much a danger to those living on the planet as to anyone approaching it.

The network was made of up almost thirty satellites that are in geo-synchronous orbit around the Earth's cities. Each individual satellite was equipped with its own shield generator and phaser weapons. The entire network was operated from a ground-based control room, but each satellite was also able to act independently once a general series of instructions were received.

The network of satellites were linked to each other by a tachyon field. Should the link have been broken at any point, then the two satellites involved would have immediately obliterated the cities they hovered over. Any attack upon an individual satellite would have caused the same reaction. If any satellite was to have been destroyed, the tachyon field would have automatically reset itself to compensate for the missing link in the field.

The planetary network was finally destroyed during the Battle of Earth in 2431, both from ground-based work and through a vicious orbital battle between Starfleet and the satellites. However, the network had done its damage - at the height of the battle, one single Aegis satellite destroyed the city of Paris, killing over 28 million people and leaving a permanent black spot on the planet's surface.
