USS EIDOLON (NCC-25701)

The USS EIDOLON, NCC-25701 and the first ever Starfleet vessel to bear the name, was a Suttner-class starship in service for six months in 2420.

When construction of the Eidolon was completed in late 2419, the ship was sent to Gateway station for her shakedown cruise. The Suttner-class was a brand new design of starship at the time, and the Eidolon was one of its original production run. Under Commander Gene McInnes, she launched from Gateway in the new year, but within weeks was dispatched back to the Alpha Quadrant.

Orion pirates were raiding shipping lanes between the Federation, Klingon Empire, and the Triangle. Despite numerous protests, diplomacy had not succeeded in preventing further attacks on Federation shipping, and the Eidolon was assigned to protect the trade lanes from Orion interference.

Following the trail of the pirates, the Eidolon tracked them to the notorious Hell's Throat region of space, discovering that the pirate attacks were being orchestrated from an Orion Base Star - a capital ship home to many pirate raiders. With their hiding place exposed,the Orions launched a full-scale attack upon the Eidolon. Over the course of several days, the embattled starship managed to destroy the Orion Base Star, but suffered mortal damage in the process. A portion of the star drive section survived, and had to be towed back to Gateway Station. As it was hopelessly beyond salvage, the ship was decommissioned, bringing a premature end to a promising career.

The hulk of the Eidolon remained at Gateway station's junkyard, awaiting its final fate. When the Second Dominion War broke out in 2422, the Dominion laid siege to the station. In order to break the Dominion blockade, the Gateway defenders jury-rigged the battered hulk back into action, and USS Eidolon was finally destroyed in a blaze of glory fighting the enemy fleet.
