USS PENDRAGON (NCC-20109)

The USS PENDRAGON, NCC-20109, is an Excalibur-class starship and the fourth Starfleet vessel to bear the name, currently in service, but listed as Missing.

The USS PENDRAGON was actually the last of the initial production of the long-range Excalibur-class explorer, which marked a full return to the primary exploration mission of Starfleet. The PENDRAGON launched in 2423, and after a short shakedown cruise she was given her final refit.

She went out in to the void with an unusual crew make up, being under the command of Marine Colonel Alexander Towers with no fewer than two Starfleet Captains in the command crew.

In its early days, the PENDRAGON encountered sentient vessels and nascent Borg collectives, but nothing prepared people for the cause of the fame the PENDRAGON would later garner.

In late 2425, less than a year after setting out on her mission of exploration, with her commanding officer on an urgent assignment elsewhere, the Pendragon vanished. Many attempts were made to find the vessel, to no avail, and slowly the attempts dwindled to nothing. Starfleet listed the ship and its crew as missing, and then 'presumed lost'.

However, the sudden return in 2429 of a number of the PENDRAGON's crew to Federation space via teleportation by a mysterious alien chronoton artifact shed some light on her fate. Astonishingly, the PENDRAGON had been stranded in another galaxy, having been hurled across the cosmos when she encountered the same chronoton artifact that had just returned some of her crew. With no other options, and knowing that the voyage back to Federation space would take over two centuries, Captain Peter Aspinall took command. The PENDRAGON began her long journey home as a generational ship, hoping to trigger the mysterious chronoton artifact.

That culmination of that journey would herald a galaxy of changes, both past and present. When the PENDRAGON finally managed to reactivate the chronoton artifact and were teleported back to Earth, it was the year 2448. The Federation she returned to was much altered from the home her crew remembered and longed for. Under the leadership of Admiral Richard Edgerton, the head of the Neo-Essentialist movement, the Federation had become a twisted shadow of the noble institution it had began life as; now it was a regime bent on being a galactic power second to none. The noble goal of exploration that the PENDRAGON had launched with had vanished entirely from the Starfleet that sought to welcome them back.

Fleeing Earth to join a resistance of former Starfleet officers, the Pendragon and the chronoton artifact that had helped its journey home became the focus of a last, desperate effort to save the Federation as it had been.

Under fire from Neo-Essentialist forces, the sacrifices of their allies gave the PENDRAGON the time it needed to make one final jump back through time to the year 2429, where she immediately began gathering allies to fight the future.

Following the near-civil war in the Elandipole system, the PENDRAGON phased from existence and has not been seen since.
