USS DISCOVERY (NCC-12001)

The USS DISCOVERY, NCC-12001, was an Investigator-class starship and the eighth Starfleet vessel to bear the name, in service from 2414-2429. Over the course of her fifteen-year career, she fulfilled many different roles for Starfleet and, for a time, became one of the most famous ships in the fleet.

Originally commissioned in 2414 under Captain Callista Alaica, the DISCOVERY was at first assigned to Starfleet Intelligence for a two-year mission. Many of the tasks she completed on behalf of Starfleet Intelligence are classified, but when she had completed her assignment, the DISCOVERY was earmarked for a new mission profile - that of Starfleet's first deep space explorer in fifty years.

Refitted throughout 2416, she launched the next year under the command of Captain Julia Brennan, and explored the deadworlds of the Beta Quadrant, pushing towards the edge of the galaxy where ancient civilisations once lived. Captain Michael Turlogh Kane took over in late 2417, and under his command the ship served in the Calnarian Conflict of 2418-2419. In 2420, the DISCOVERY was involved in a momentous quest to find the mythical world of Danus and save history from the Danusians' tinkering. During these years, the ship gained fame among the general public, being the focus of several FedCom features.

Following the conclusion of her five-year mission in 2422, the ship was stood down as an explorer and was placed in the reserve fleet. However, she was once again reactivated under Captain Kane in 2429 and sent to system K-60 in the Beta Quadrant to investigate a mysterious subspace signal. Unknown to the senior officers, most of the ship's crew were hand-picked Neo-Essentialists. When the DISCOVERY found the hulk of the long-lost USS Century and realised that the Neo-Essentialist movement had returned, a mutiny was staged on the ship. Captain Kane and his senior officers managed to escape the DISCOVERY and activate the Century. In the ensuing space battle, the USS DISCOVERY NCC-12001 was destroyed, in a tragic end to her glittering career.
