USS PATRIOT, NCC-5781

The USS PATRIOT, NCC-5781, was a Galaxy-class starship, in service from 2410-2415. During its five-year career, she performed numerous First Contacts, several classified missions, and played an important role in galactic politics.

The PATRIOT has the distinction of being both the first starship to bear the name, and the very last Galaxy-class starship ever commissioned by Starfleet before its production run ended. The PATRIOT served as an experimental test bed for several now-standard technologies, such as holographic LCARS systems and a bio-regenerative hull.

The ship was launched in 2410 under the command of Captain Ian Astbury, assigned to the Third Fleet.

A year later, the PATRIOT made First Contact with the Supervisors, and were the first people in the Federation to hear their prophecy of the coming Seventh War of Retribution. The PATRIOT went on to participate in the Battle of Coriana III, where the combined forces of the Alpha Quadrant races stood together to defeat the Kem D' Neel.

In 2414, Captain Steve Carling assumed command of the ship. Shortly afterward, the PATRIOT was caught up in the events of the Borg Civil War, in which the Neo-Collective and their Dominion allies were finally defeated.

In 2415, the PATRIOT was in Klingon space, helping to quash the revolt of the False Emperor, Sovek. When the ship returned to Starbase 56, a terrorist attack occurred on the station's warp reactor. In desperation, the Starbase ejected its core to prevent a meltdown, and the PATRIOT attempted to move the core to a safe distance from the station. Unfortunately, the PATRIOT was not able to get clear of the core's explosion in time, and the ensuing detonation caused catastrophic damage to her secondary hull. With moments to spare, the ship's crew evacuated to the saucer section and separated the ship before the secondary hull was destroyed.

The PATRIOT's glittering career was over, but she was honoured with the commissioning of a new Nova II-class destroyer as her namesake - the USS PATRIOT, NCC-5781-A.
