TARG

The TARG is a vicious herd animal native to the planet Qo'noS, but thanks to their impressive survival instincts, including a life-span of around thirty years, targs are now found on many worlds throughout the galaxy.

Targs are small, hairy, thick-set animals with bone protrusions from their heads and necks. They don't have especially sharp teeth, but they use their sharp tusks to shred their prey before devouring it. Targs are omnivores, happily grazing on leaves and roots as well as pack hunting smaller live prey, migrating annually through a series of favoured feeding grounds. Their stomach produces highly-corrosive sulphuric acid, which allows them to eat almost any flora or fauna they can find.

Their ability to breed quickly meant that they quickly become one of the most populous animals on Qo'noS. Klingons kept targs as pets, but also hunted the larger, more dangerous male targs, and the targ meat industry is one of the most important economies across their territory. As the Klingon Empire expanded, targs were introduced to many worlds as a sustainable food source, but since the collapse of the Klingon Empire fifty years ago, the targ population across the old Empire has dwindled. Their numbers are being built back up again, but on many worlds formerly part of the Klingon Empire, herds of wild targs are to this day running free.
