THE TAL SHIAR

The TAL SHIAR is the feared intelligence network and secret police of the Romulan Star Empire. They are a highly capable and feared organisation, easily the equal of Starfleet Intelligence.

Romulan society is strictly totalitarian, where political dissent is a crime against both the government and the people. Tal Shiar agents often spend their entire careers undercover, masquerading as normal citizens, but secretly filing loyalty reports on everyone within their circle of friends and acquaintances. Both at home and in public, a Romulan dissenter must always be on her guard.

Externally, the Tal Shiar operates counter-intelligence against foreign agents and conducts espionage against foreign powers. Not all of their agents are Romulan, and Starfleet Intelligence classifies the Tal Shiar as one of the greatest external threats to the Federation's stability.
