128 TRIANGULI II (ROMULUS)

The planet of ROMULUS is the adopted homeworld of the Romulan people. It is the second world of the four-planet 128 Trianguli system, and the first of two class-M worlds in that system. Two millennia ago, Vulcans fleeing the adoption of logic on their homeworld chose this uninhabited planet to settle on, and over the centuries became Romulans.

Romulus is a temperate world, much like Earth, with large lakes and oceans. The climate and geology varies, with icecaps on the poles and deserts around the equator. It is abundant in animal and plant life, but after the initial settlement by the Romulans, they discovered that mineral resources are scarce. This necessitated the colonisation of REMUS, the mineral-rich third planet in the system, and together the two planets became the capital worlds of the Romulan Star Empire.

The capital city of Romulus, Ki-Baratan, lies on the coast of the Apnex Sea. The Romulan Imperial Sentate sits in Ki Barantan's Hall of State. The planet's population levels are unknown.

The most significant feature about the planet Romulus is that its sun is dying. Based on data from the few Federation starships to have far enough into Romulan space to have scanned the Romulan system, it is thought that the star is in the final stages of its main sequence life, and that a supernova is (in astonomical terms) imminent. Indeed, there was a supernova scare in 2387, but Starfleet Intelligence believes that the Romulans may soon need a new homeworld, and may already be in the planning stages of moving off-world in order to preserve their civilisation. Indeed, the crew of the starship Phoenix witnessed such preparations during their visit to Romulus in 2432, but it is unknown how advanced those plans are.
