PROCYON VIII-A (ANDORIA)

Contrary to popular conception and often confused with its parent, ANDORIA is not a planet. It is one of the two moons of the eighth planet in the Procyon system. As such, its astronomical designation is Procyon VIII A. The Procyon system is centred by binary suns - a white dwarf orbiting a yellow dwarf. The eighth planet (known as Andor) is a ringed gas giant that is clearly visible in the skies of its two moons.

The M-class moon known as Andoria is the homeworld of the Andorian and Aenar peoples, as well as a variety of zoological life especially adapted for living on the frozen surface. Although class M with a nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere, Andoria is very cold, being blanketed by a layer of permafrost and ice. 85% of the moon's surface is frozen water. It is geologically active and somewhat unstable - earthquakes are not uncommon on Andoria, and the Andorians themselves live underground, warmed by strong geothermal activity. Their civilisation is completely subterranean, with cities being connected to one another by thousands of kilometers of tunnels.

Andoria was a founding member of the United Federation of Planets in 2161. Today, it has a population of some four billion Andorians and Aenar. It lies in sector zero-zero-six, and is orbited by Starbase 118.
