Personality & Traits

General Overview John Maynell is extremely driven. He takes after his mother in that way, never satisfied with his current position and always looking for what he can do to improve it. This means that he sometimes rubs people the wrong way. People sometimes accuse John of being too uptight, too straight-laced, too humorless. John tends to demand the same excellence from others that he demands from himself, and that can also be an obstacle for him when it comes to making friends.

People who aren't put off by his intensity find that John can be a loyal friend. He has a sarcastic sense of humor that can occasionally seem mean to those who don't know him, but he's as quick to be self-deprecating as he is to make fun of someone else. He is usually the first person to interrupt the joke sessions by pointing out that none of the work is getting done, however.

John leads an ordered life. Rules are important to him. His personal commitment to excellence makes him a dependable, skilled officer with an exemplary service record, but he will always be a little slower to changing circumstances than the best of his peers. What Maynell lacks in unconventional thinking, he makes up for with dogged determination, and will often find the solutions that others miss while they're too busy trying to be smarter than the problem.
Strengths & Weaknesses John Maynell is a very driven man, eager to show he has what it takes to follow in his mother's footsteps and captain his own ship one day. He is very dedicated, punctual, and has a tendency to hold others to the same standards to which he holds himself. He can also be quite stubborn, and slow to improvise. He's a dependable officer, but he has trouble thinking outside the box. To his credit, he's aware of this shortcoming and works hard to correct it, but quick, unconventional thinking will never be his strongest suit.
Hobbies & Interests Favorite Food: Chicken Caesar Salad
Favorite Drink: Sparkling water
Hobbies and Interests: Exercise, especially exotic jogging via the holodeck, ardent follower of zero-g sports (and an amateur player, as well)

Personal History Jonathan Maynell, or John to his friends and colleagues, has spent his whole life feeling like he was born for Starfleet. His mother, Patricia Maynell, was a Starfleet officer, and John's earliest memories involve the warmly-lit corridors of Starfleet vessels. As John grew up, he watched his mother rise through the ranks, eventually achieving a command of her own. John had already shown a knack for engineering, as well as the kind of character and leadership that befitted a Starfleet officer. Once he was old enough, John transmitted his application to Starfleet Academy and was accepted.

John worked hard, and showed he was a quick study. He grasped the concepts of engineering theory quicker than most of his classmates, and he put in the hard work to become skilled at physical maintenance of equipment. John always struggled with improvisational engineering solutions, however. His mind worked well in an ordered environment, but coming up with new solutions in response to changing circumstances was always difficult for him.

Halfway through his career, John discovered something that shook his confidence: his mother had pulled some strings to ensure that John would be accepted into the Academy. John's mother assured him that she was only looking out for her son, and that all his test scores and reports from his academy professors said that John would have gotten in even without the recommendation. Still, John couldn't feel like he'd been given special treatment due to his mother's rank. John stayed with the program, and graduated near the top of his class. When an offer to test into the Academy's Advanced Command Training program was extended to him, John once again thought it was his mother smoothing his way through the ranks. John declined the offer, and instead decided to work his way up on his own.

Since leaving the academy, Maynell has distinguished himself on several starships and Starbases. He is committed to the ideals of the Federation, committed to Starfleet, and committed to himself. He wants to prove he has what it takes to be counted among the best, and he will never stop working towards that goal.
Education Academy Major: Engineering (Warp Theory)
Academy Minor: Engineering (Starship Design)
Additional Education: Candidate for Advanced Command Training program, though Maynell declined to enroll, preferring to work his way up the same way his mother did.
